The little bird, a messenger of good news, stands for happiness and peace. Birds living in pairs symbolise a happy marriage, and their flight makes them a popular gift for new beginnings. Shaped after a plump, lovable fledgling about to leave the nest. A work by artist Teppei Ono. After the base colour is overglaze-painted, the pattern is drawn in lacquer and gold leaf is applied over it. The hand-drawn, slightly irregular dots and the fine lustre of gold leaf blend softly into any interior. Finished with care down to the base. At Ono's suggestion, a tiny hand-pinched mini momoco bird comes with this piece. Each piece is handmade, so dot size and placement vary. Gold leaf may wear or change colour over time. ■ Teppei Ono: known for bold expression with traditional gold-leaf techniques. Born in Ureshino, Saga. Graduated from Saga Prefectural Arita College of Ceramics (1995) and its research course (1996), then worked at a kiln in Hasami.
